The Creative Process

Each individual’s creative process is unique to them, and even then, that process may change over time.

For example, when I finished my middle grade series, The Ever Afters, I wrote about my creative process here. It had only five stages. My current creative process has seven.

To explain them, I’m currently developing a video series called "Journeying through the Creative Process,” but you can see a preview of the stages below.

I’ll also be organizing some of my tips according to these stages.

But engage your discernment as you look them over. Take only what is useful for you, and even if these tools don’t speak to you in their current form, maybe you’ll find a kernel you can adapt.

  1. We Begin with Courage and Capacity.

  • Here’s the Shelbish Glossary Definition for Courage. I’m specifically talking about finding a very good reason for doing…anything, including your creativity.

  • Capacity, like courage, is also a renewable resource. I’ve compiled some writing around how I go about renewing these resources in the “Renewing Capacity” collection.

2. Dream.
