Creative Toolkit

This is a growing collection of Shelby’s creative toolkit. We start with defining two areas where the tools are used. (Spoiler Alert: sometimes, you’re using the exact same tools in both areas.)

  • The Creative Process.

This is the active, hands-on process of making something, such as writing a novel. This is what we talk about the most when we talk about writing, but in some ways, it’s just the tip of the iceburg.

  • Our Hidden Roots.

These are the behind the scenes unfolding behind every finished piece of art or other milestone event. Some of our creativity takes place underground, supporting and nourishing us as we engage in the creative process.

This page is currently under construction.

Technically, it’s under re-construction, since I’ve built it before. But I’m reorganizing behind the scenes to make it easier to use.

In the meantime, you might explore areas of the website which are already built.

  • Renewing Capacity.

This collection of tools is designed to help you renew your capacity for your life and for your creative projects. I started it at the very beginning of the pandemic, because I figured there was a need for it. As we rebuild our lives afterwards, we still need it.

  • People Are Stories-in-Progress.

This is an offering that dives deep into a particular area of the writing craft: an exploration of character development in storytelling. As it turns out, I use the exact same tools for telling the story of my own life as I do for crafting character arcs.

  • Shelbish Glossary

I talk about writing in my own way, and when I repeat a term often enough, I define it to explain exactly what I mean. Each of these glossary definitions also outline a method or concept I use when I develop a story—some that I’m writing and some that I’m living.
